Most chimneys with deteriorated mortar or a handful of damaged bricks can be repaired. When damage is extensive — for example, widespread loose bricks near the top, significant leaning, or severe deterioration throughout — partially rebuilding the affected section may be more appropriate. Water is the main cause of chimney deterioration. Once it gets into the masonry, it can break down mortar, crack bricks during cold snaps and travel into the home. Keeping joints sound and the crown intact are among the most effective ways to protect your chimney.
