Brickwork Repairs & Mortar Repointing in Vancouver
Sound mortar joints keep water out and hold your brickwork together. We repair damaged bricks and repoint deteriorated mortar using compatible materials.
Brick is one of the most durable building materials there is — but the mortar between the bricks is designed to be the weaker, sacrificial part of the wall. Over decades, it erodes, cracks and falls out, leaving gaps that let water into the masonry.
Apex Property & Roof Restorations repairs brickwork and repoints mortar joints on homes across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Done properly, repointing restores both the appearance of the wall and its ability to shed water, often extending the life of the brickwork considerably.
Common brickwork problems
Cracked and damaged bricks
Bricks may crack or spall, losing their outer face, especially where they stay wet.
Loose or deteriorating mortar
Sandy, crumbling or recessed joints no longer protect the wall properly.
Localized deterioration
Areas under leaking gutters, near downspouts or at ground level often deteriorate faster.
Weather and moisture damage
Water entering through open joints accelerates damage to both brick and mortar.

What is repointing?
Repointing is the process of removing old, deteriorated mortar from between bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. It restores the joints' ability to keep water out and helps hold the wall together. It's one of the most common — and most valuable — masonry repairs.
Repointing versus replacing bricks
If the bricks themselves are sound and the problem is the mortar, repointing is usually all that's needed. Where individual bricks are cracked or badly spalled, those units can be cut out and replaced as part of the repair.
Why compatible mortar and workmanship matter
Mortar that's too hard for the surrounding brick can actually cause damage, forcing stress and moisture into the bricks instead of the joints. Matching mortar strength and appearance, and taking care when raking out joints, is what makes repointing last and look right.
It's also important to address the source of water — such as a leaking gutter or poor drainage — so the new work isn't undermined.
